The Honda K20 and K24 engine were introduced in 2001. The first engine to be introduced was the K20A. Unlike previous Honda engines this used a clockwise rotation hence making it suitable for rear wheel drive conversions, where the transmission is almost always setup for a clockwise rotating engine. The engines use a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) valvetrain and utilise roller rockers for the valve actuation to reduce friction. The engines employ a coil-on-plug, distributorless ignition system with a coil for each spark plug.
The engine uses variable valve timing (VVT, VTEC, I-VTEC or VTC). The VTEC system on engines like the K20A3 operates on the intake cam, with only 1 intake valve fully opened at low speeds, whilst at high engine speeds both intake valves open fully to improve engine breathing. In engines such as the K20A2 the VTEC system operates on both the intake and exhaust valves. The camshafts are turned by a timing chain, aiding reliability.
The K-series engines have two short blocks with the same design. The K20 uses a block with a deck height of 212 mm (8.3 in) and the K23 and K24 block have a deck height of 231.5 mm (9.1 in). The K20 has square bore dimensions of 86 mm x 86 mm (3.386 in x 3.386 in) and displacement of 1,998 cc. The K24 has the same 86 mm bore with a stroke of 99mm. Power can vary between 156 – 215hp at 8,000RPM with a peak torque of 149lb/ft at 7,000rpm for the naturally aspirated version. Power can be up to 306 bhp in the case of the stock turbocharged engine.

We have a number of K20 tranmission options that will allow you convert your Honda K series engine to RWD including a K20 and K24 RWD conversion / swap kit. This include a K20 RWD transmission adapter, which can be bought separately and mates the Honda K20 and K24 to a Ford Type 9 pattern gearbox. The bellhousing is available in quick fit* or standard fitment and is pre-drilled to allow 0 degrees (vertical) or the standard 15 degrees alignment.
Many sequential gearboxes use the Ford Type 9 gearbox pattern. The list below is not exhaustive. Please consult your gearbox supplier to check first.
- Ford Type 9 5 Speed
- Quaife sequential (QBE60G)
- Drenth sequential
- Tractive sequential
- Samsonas H type and sequential
The bellhousing adapters are designed to be hydraulically actuated and use our Hydraulic Heavy Duty Release Bearing, which connects via an adapter (included) directly to the bellhousing rear inner face. The bearing has a flat release bearing for curly finger diaphragm springs and a radiused bearing for flat diaphragm springs. The Honda K20 And K24 Heavy Duty Clutch Cover And Friction Disc Kit uses curly finger diaphragm springs and so requires a flat release bearing. It can be fitted directly to a standard K20 flywheel or our Honda K20 Lightweight Steel Flywheel – Standard Clutch Plate. The radiused bearing would be for use with our Honda K20 Lightweight Steel Flywheel – 7 1/4″ 184mm Race Clutch Plate and Twin plate 7 1/4″ paddle clutch.
The Honda K20 And K24 Engine To Ford Type 9 Gearbox Spigot Bearing comprise 2 ball bearings, which are glued into the end of the crankshaft using loctite or a similar thread adhesive. This supports the spigot / pilot end of the input shaft. The usual needle roller spigot bearing cannot be used as the crankshaft does not have a sufficiently deep recess to allow this. Due to the lack of depth in the crank recess It will be necessary to cut a standard Type 9 input shaft spigot down by around 6mm, reducing the overall length of the input shaft from 171mm to 165mm.
We also sell a complete Honda K20 and K24 Bellhousing Kit where you can pick the parts that you need for your conversion.
