The Ford Duratec engine designation has been applied to many engine types. These include the Ford Zetec engine, the Ford Sigma engine, the Mazda L engine and the Ford EcoBoost engine. We sell RWD transmission parts for the Zetec engine and Sigma engine separately. This article details the Mazda L engine and some later Ford EcoBoost engines.
The Mazda L engine is available in 1.8 Litre (110 CID; 1798 cc), 2.0 Litre (122 CID; 1999 cc), 2.3 Litre (138 CID; 2261 cc) and 2.5 Litre (152 CID; 2488 cc) versions. The engine uses a chain-driven DOHC, 16-valve valvetrain with an all-aluminum block construction and cast-iron cylinder liners. It has fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and a one-piece cast crankshaft. The crankshaft is held by an aluminium girdle.
Some versions use VVT (variable valve timing) and later versions used direct fuel injection.

We have 4 Duratec tranmission options that will allow you convert your Duratec engine to RWD. These include the Duratec Engine to Ford Gearbox Cable Clutch Bellhousing for cars that need to retain a cable clutch, Duratec Engine to Ford Gearbox Hydraulic Clutch Bellhousing for cable operation our new Duratec Engine to Borg Warner T5 or Tremec Gearbox Hydraulic Clutch Bellhousing and to connect to a Toyota W56 or W58 our Duratec Engine to Toyota W Series Gearbox Bellhousing.
The Ford Type 9 bellhousings are available in quick fit (allowing the gearbox to removed from the bellhousing in situ) or standard fitment options.
Many sequential gearboxes use the Ford Type 9 gearbox pattern. The list below is not exhaustive. Please consult your gearbox supplier to check first.
- Ford Type 9 5 Speed
- Quaife sequential (QBE60G)
- Drenth sequential
- Tractive sequential
- Samsonas H type and sequential
The Borg Warner or Tremec T5 has been fitted to a wide variety of cars including the Sierra Cosworth and Mustang. Please see our Borg Warner T5 page for information on the various input shaft and spline sizes.
The hydraulic bellhousing allows the slave cylinder to connect via an adapter (included) directly to the bellhousing rear inner face. The bearing has a flat release face for curly finger diaphragm springs. The original tube where the thrust bearing slid needs cutting off leaving only the part that houses the oil seal. This is because the thrust tube diameter is greater than the bearing inner diameter.
The cable bellhousing requires the RS2000 Clutch Fork and RS2000 Clutch Release Bearing. The pivot pin is included.
The Duratec is generally supplied with a dual mass setup, which is incompatible with our bellhousings or a competition or fast road setup in general. We supply the Ford Duratec lightweight Steel Flywheel – 8 1/2″ Clutch Plate or Ford Duratec lightweight Steel Flywheel – 7 1/4″ Race Clutch Plate for use with the standard Pinto pattern clutch or our race clutch respectively.
All FWD-sourced Duratec engines will require the spigot bearing that fits directly in the end of the crankshaft. The required starter is the Ford Mondeo or Focus model number 1S7U 11000 AD, which can be bought from our store. Please note that the Ford Ranger and other RWD variants may have 116 teeth. The starter motor from these vehicles are not compatible with the smaller 112 tooth flywheel as they have a 10mm greater offset.
When the Duratec is moved from a transverse FWD layout to an inline RWD layout a number of changes will be required. The Duratec Water Manifold simplifies the cooling system when used in a longitudinal engine position. The Duratec Thermostat and Housing replaces the standard Mondeo Duratec item that is controlled by the Mondeo ECU. The Duratec Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Blanking Plate seals the hole left when the recirculation valve is removed.
If you are increasing the revolutions substantially on your Duratec you may wish to consider using our underdrive pulley, which reduces the speed at which the ancillaries rotate at to prevent over-revving.
